Entry requirements

Academic entry qualification overview

We required applicants to hold, or be about to obtain, an Upper Second class Honours degree (or overseas equivalent) in a related subject area for entry to a PhD programme. A Lower Second class Honours degree may be considered if applicants also hold a Masters degree with a Merit classification.

English language

For applicants whose first language is not English, or if you have not studied recently in the UK, you  must  supply an official IELTS or TOEFL transcript to support your application, or provide a date on which you will be taking a test.

If your IELTS or TOEFL expires before the start of your programme, you will need to take another official English test before we can issue you with a CAS for your visa application. This is a requirement of UKVI.

We require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall or TOEFL (iBT) 90.

Each component of the English test should meet the minimum requirement of IELTS 5.5 in all components or 22 in TOEFL (iBT). For the  writing component  in IELTS we expect that you have achieved a minimum of 6.0.

Some English Language test results are only valid for two years. Your English Language test report must be valid on the start date of the course.

Fees

Fees for entry in 2026 have not yet been set. For reference, the fees for the academic year beginning September 2025 were as follows:

  • PhD (full-time)
    UK students (per annum): Clinical-based £22,000 non-clinical Standard £5,006, Low £9,500, Medium £17,000, High £22,000
    International, including EU, students (per annum): Clinical-based £47,000, non-clinical Standard £27,000, Low £28,500, Medium £34,500, High £40,500
  • PhD (part-time)
    UK students (per annum): Clinical-based £11,000, non Clinical Standard £2,503, Low £4,750, Medium £8,500, High £11,000
    International, including EU, students (per annum): Clinical-based £23,500, non clinical Standard £12,750, Low £13,250, Medium £16,750, High £19,250

Programme description

Our PhD/MPhil Dental Health Sciences programme enables you to undertake a that will improve understanding of Dental Health Sciences.

Research in dental health sciences seeks to improve the evidence base for dental public health, service delivery and clinical interventions to inform dental policy, dental commissioning clinical practice and, ultimately, improve patient and population health.

The team has strong links with the NHS and Public Health England in the north-west of England, and provides advice on the design and management of public health programmes and dental services.

We have a strong reputation for the delivery of high quality systematic reviews, predominantly through our support of the Cochrane Oral Health Review Group (COHG), an international network of healthcare professionals, researchers and consumers.

Training and development

All of our postgraduate researchers attend the Doctoral Academy Training Programme delivered by the Researcher Development . The programme provides key transferable skills and equips our postgraduate researchers with the tools to progress beyond their research degree into influential positions within academia, industry and consultancy. The emphasis is on enhancing skills critical to developing early-stage researchers and professionals, whether they relate to effective communication, disseminating research findings and project management skills.
